The default license for every design we steward. Use, study, modify, and redistribute — provided your modifications and network-accessible derivatives are released under the same terms.
For organizations whose business model is incompatible with AGPLv3's copyleft — embedded in proprietary products, used in closed SaaS, or combined with software under conflicting licenses.
The AGPLv3 is permissive in the rights it grants — you can use the work for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Its only requirement is that derivative works, including those offered over a network, are themselves released under AGPLv3.
For most research, internal tooling, open-source projects, and applications already willing to share their source, AGPLv3 is the right choice. The Foundation Commercial License exists for cases where AGPLv3's terms create a business conflict.
No. Evaluation, prototyping, and internal research are fully covered under AGPLv3. The commercial license applies only when you ship.
Yes. Academic and non-profit applications are routinely granted favourable terms, including no-cost commercial licenses where appropriate.
Yes. The commercial license includes a patent grant scoped to the licensed designs, equivalent to the grant offered under AGPLv3 for open use.
The Foundation operates as a non-profit. Commercial licensing revenue sustains the open-source work, supports independent research, and is partly remitted to the design source under our exclusive licensing arrangement. See Governance for details.
Under AGPLv3 you may redistribute the work and your modifications, provided you do so under AGPLv3. The commercial license is non-transferable except by explicit Foundation approval.
